These are proportion groups, not rankings. The women's set follows the seven-shape method plus a round/apple reading; the men's set covers five common frames. The only question any of them answers: where does a garment need room, and where can it follow your line?

The numbers

How common is each shape?

A study of more than 6,000 US women at North Carolina State University sorted real bodies into shape groups. It's a useful reality check: the hourglass so often shown as default is actually the rarest result.

Read this loosely. These proportions describe one population at one point in time. Distributions shift with age, region, genetics and the measuring method, and many bodies sit between categories or fit none cleanly. The takeaway isn't a target — it's that every shape, including the most common ones, is entirely ordinary.

The method, in the open

Women's shapes use the FFIT (Female Figure Identification Technique) rules from a peer-reviewed clothing-science study. The calculator compares your bust, waist, high hip and hips against these thresholds, in inches, in this order. No black box.

Hourglass

(bust − hips) ≤ 1 and (hips − bust) < 3.6 and (bust − waist ≥ 9 or hips − waist ≥ 10)

Top hourglass

(bust − hips) > 1 and (bust − hips) < 10 and (bust − waist) ≥ 9

Bottom hourglass

(hips − bust) ≥ 3.6 and (hips − bust) < 10 and (hips − waist) ≥ 9 and (high hip ÷ waist) < 1.193

Beyond shape

Waist-to-hip ratio

Your result also shows your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) — waist divided by hips. Unlike body shape, which is about styling, WHR is a number health researchers actually use. Here's the plain version, with the reference bands and an honest note on what they do and don't mean.

WHR is a rough, population-level indicator of where weight tends to sit, not a verdict on any individual. Health bodies including the WHO and NIDDK use higher WHR — more weight around the middle — as one signal among many that can correlate with cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

It says nothing about your fitness, and it can't diagnose anything on its own. A single measurement, taken at home, is a starting point for a conversation with a clinician — never a substitute for one.

Reference bands per WHO and the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Thresholds differ by source and population; treat them as approximate.

How to measure well

A silhouette is only as honest as the tape. Stand straight with arms at your sides, keep the tape snug but not compressing, and hold it parallel to the floor. Measure over close-fitting clothing.

Bust or shoulders

Women: the circumference around the fullest part of the bust, over a properly fitted bra. Men: the broadest line across the shoulders or chest — whichever you can repeat consistently.

Waist

The smallest circumference around the natural waist, just above the belly button. If it's hard to find, bend gently to one side — the crease marks it.

High hip

The upper swell of the hip over the pelvic region, roughly 7 in / 18 cm below the natural waist. This is what separates the close pear-family shapes.

Hips

The largest circumference around the fullest part of the buttocks, heels together so the tape stays level front to back.
